Yogr was born out of a passion for yoga and a desire to share its transformative power with others after experiencing the benefits first hand.
It all started after a severe whiplash injury left me in constant agonising neck, shoulder and upper back pain.
This was further compounded from years of insomnia caused by frequent overworking - leaving me in a vicious cycle of poor sleep causing increased tension and pain, which would further impede my sleep.
An exhausting loop I just couldn't break.
I spent 2-3 years trying to manage my pain with medication, private/NHS physiotherapy appointments, acupuncture and regular massages. Providing only short term mild relief at best, Yoga was a last resort.
Desperate, and experiencing early symptoms of depression, I took the advice of my Physio and signed up to a generic yoga class at my local gym.
I would love to say that my love for yoga was immediate, but in all honesty, that first class was hard. Between holding in the laughter (at myself and my huge inability to hold any pose) and feeling like I was literally an elephant in the room with such heavy footing, I didn't think it was something I'd ever be even slightly competent at - let alone something I'd become to enjoy.
But knowing that there was no miracle cure (lifestyle symptoms require lifestyle changes after all), I committed myself to 3 months of yoga.
My most optimistic idea of practicing Yoga, was that it could be an affordable way to manage pain. But fairly quickly - and unexpectedly, it became so much more for me.
Within just 8-10 weeks of incorporating Yoga (just 1 hour a week), I realised that I was no longer in constant pain. In fact, some days there was barely any pain at all! It's like all of a sudden, I could reach or stretch that little bit further, with poses feeling that little bit more comfortable. I was really beginning to enjoy my practice and would really look forward to my time on the mat.
If I didn't practice for a couple of weeks however, I would begin to notice pain creeping back pretty quickly.
So whilst it wasn't a miracle cure or quick fix, Yoga was exactly what I need for rehabilitation.
I practiced this way for a couple of years before feeling like I needed more.
Having already benefited from minor improvements in my posture, flexibility and strength, and now familiar with many of the asanas (poses), I transitioned from a generic gym based class into something more progressive and challenging - absolute game changer!
This is where I really got to explore variations of yoga, alternative styles and poses, whilst still maintaining a love for the simple flows and Sanskrit traditions.
During this time I also moved away from higher intensity workouts and developed a love for weight lifting - which for many isn't an obvious combo with yoga, they actually compliment each other very well.
I also began to relax into my practice, listening more closely to my body, mind and breath, and appreciate how far I've come, instead of how far I still want to go. Letting go, really helped me to enjoy the flow - and more!
At every opportunity I found I was talking about yoga and, my experience all it's other benefits (rehab / strength / flexibility / longevity / stress relief) with everyone that would (and wouldn't!- haha!) listen. That's when I knew I had become completely passionate about yoga and how it can help others.
Having experienced first and second hand, the negative impact of injury, trauma, and severe exhaustion and burnout, I know all to well the challenges we face daily in a society that encourages us to push through the hard and keep a brave face, no matter how difficult it becomes.
Feeling unheard by so many (including by those specialist we're encouraged to trust), I refused to be a victim, survivor or endless fighter in my bid to rediscover myself and my wellness.
My journey through the hard has now put me on a path of discovery and rediscovery. As I began to find and address my root cause, I now understand that the body (as well as the mind) holds on to past trauma and emotions, and the physical impact this can have on our bodies. New research is confirming that this combined with our western diet/lifestyle can have a significant impact on our health and is a root to many of todays diseases.
Whilst my lifestyle has always been active and my diet healthy (limiting the consumption of processed foods mostly available in the supermarkets today), I was still not immune to the impact of physical, mental and emotional trauma that caused significant levels of oxidated stress in the body,
Symptoms of which can be weight gain, depression, thyroid issues and autoimmune disease (including fibromyalgia), brain fog, disrupted and heavy cycles, insomnia, and anxiety to name just a few - disproportionately affecting more women than men due to the complex nature of our hormones.
Understanding this and hearing the cries of so many women in similar situations, I now choose to listen to my body, and to help you to listen to yours too. Together we will work much more harmoniously with our bodies and to learn to trust and listen to our instincts.
To help you to begin your rediscovery of an optimal life, we will explore together slower paced practices, with the occasional increase in tempo.
Additionally I will run ad-hoc workshops or slightly longer classes, where we can explore much more deeply the benefits of yin yoga and myo-fascia release to help support our body, mind, energetic, emotional and spiritual dimensions.
If you don't feel quite right, are feeling unheard whilst you try and manage pain or injury, emotional or physical trauma, or are generally feeling run-down and not quite yourself,...
Welcome to Yogr, a safe and friendly space where you can begin to work on improving your wellness at a pace that is right for you
Yoga is about more than just being flexible or achieving that challenging pose! It’s about improving quality of life & allowing yourself a moment just for you, in a world where we feel we need to be so much to so many.
It helps builds strength, stability & realignment whilst also reducing stress & inflammation throughout the body (including the nervous system!).
It can even help prevent aging diseases such as osteoporosis & promote longevity.
With regular practice, learn how to avoid ego yoga instead relaxing into a pose to work more gently with your body & breath which is the key to maximising benefits.
My aim is to create a personal practice for everyone. Holding small intimately sized classes to enable me to work more closely with you to reach your goals.
Together we’ll explore a range of styles, poses & variations, incorporating props to ensure everyone is getting the most from their practice.
Classes are typically 60 minutes which includes breath connection, warm up, gently flow and target poses, cool down and relaxation. Please arrive 5 minutes before class to allow yourself time to set up and prepare for your practice. Props are provided or alternatively bring your own
